Thanks for the info...

Btw, how fast from the BTS at MBK to Huai Khwang?

When we were at Bkk earlier this year and as the subway was not ready then, the taxi-driver brought us for a merry-go-round via the highway before we finally reached Rachada....

The shortest time I've taken to reach Huay Kwang is about 20-25 mins...from MBK (National Stadium) to Siam Ctr (the transfer here sometimes got to wait a while), then to Asok Station, then take the stair down to Sukhumvit Station then to Huay Kwany (should be the 4th station).

However, in my opinion, if want to go to Poseidon or Copa, I think nearer is from Suthisarn Station, 1 station after Huay Kwang.

Rgds.

I find the BTS and MRT system does not save much in terms of transportation in Bangkok. Generally, taking taxi is more convenient and the fares are not that expensive as compared to their train systems. But for those who wish to aventure Bangkok on their own. Their train systems could be good, very similar to Singapore's MRT. Most of their stations have easy access to shopping centres and places of attractions. Not easy to get lost.

In the early days, I used to call taxi no doubt is cheap compared to here but there are times that the destination is just behind a few buildings but taxi due to only one-way carriage way you are taken a long ride and could be very time consuming particularly office hours, jams almost everywhere, hot and stuffy. Get too convenient and addicted to taxi you will not border to locate where the actual location of your destination liao........and till this date still lost in this concrete jungle...it is me hehehe...now learn to go BTS + subway lor..

I shared the same sentiment as bro.Sornporn. The BTS and Subway combination doesn't help very much in time and cost saving nor convinience. it really depends on the time of the day....

On my last trip, my colleage and i took the Subway n BTS combination fm the Rachada station to Erawan @ Chitlom BTS station. At the current promotion rate n the Subway, it's a total of 35b each. Two of us total 70b. That's was around 1000. The journey was ok...except for some walking up and down the escalator...Total journey takes about half an hour.

After finishing our tasks around 1600 we decided to take a taxi back to wherewe stayed at the Grand hotel. NB...taxi fare is only 60b. Right up to our hotel door step...no walking up and down, no need to walk in the rain (it was drizzling
then), no hassle at all. It took less than 20 minutes.

To be fair b'cos of the subway, the traffic along rachada road has improve tremendously...

So should i take the taxi or the subway/bts fm Rachada to Mbk/Erawan the next time ???

Ha..ha... I think i 'll go for the soft option. The taxi....

gigantic_tk
21-09-2004, 02:14 PM
Unless you can speak some of their local language, else to tell the taxi driver the location is also a problem. With a group travelling in taxi is convenient and save cost and time. For individual there isn't much cost savings and worst sometimes the driver brings you to a different location, i kenna twice lah. One is in Changmai, the other in Bangkok and that was years ago.

Btw, agreed with Bros Sinoview that Taxi is the best option.

Travelling around BKK central like Silom,Suk,Rach and most hotels, taxi is the cheapest option during off peak hours.

If i'm not wrong there's no midnight charge too right ?
Better, safer and cleaner than tuk tuks or crazy motorcycle taxis.

I'll stick with metered taxis whenever i'm in Bangkok.
Cheers !

Actually, if you are travelling in a group and if there is not 'rod-dtit'/ traffic jam. It is wiser to take cab.

During my last visit, I and faen took MRT from hway hwang to MBK, cost 70B.
On the way back during peak hour at 3.30 pm, the cab fees from MBK to Ratchada is just 80B.

Still prefer taxi if travelling during off peak and travelling in group.

Fully agreed with you...

Except that actually don't need a group...two person enough to justify taking cab liao.

It save the trouble to walk to the stations which can be quite far. Walking the air poluted and crowbed road, the climbing of up and down the escalator and stair especially after a tiring shopping trip or raining can be quite a hassle.

The cab will take us from point to point. Just sit and relax.....

If it is during the peak hour and bangkok has some kind of "celebration" whereby some major roads are restricted.....then Subway n BTS may be a good alternative....

As a visitor, my greatest "worry" (or rather hate) is allowing the taxi driver to earn commission on my bonks! I rather give the WL the money! So even if I take taxi, I will always alight at an adjoining place (must be able to name the place/location in Thai) and make sure he's departed before I move into the joint. That way, I do my best to get prices which does not have the taxi commission built in.

If alone, and traffic heavy, I opt for the subway and if traffic is light, I take a taxi too as its cheap enough. But, must be able to name the adjoining place or street name so he knows where to go.

Then again, you have a taxi driver and you say massage parlour name, his whole face lights up - guess why? Hes not fucking, but he sees the colour of money!

Huay Kwang station is near to Nataree & Emmuxxxxx Massage parlour just 100 meter away from exit 4 - - just went there via this way last week evening. To Poseidon you need to alight one station after Huay Kwang.

Note: The fare from Sukhumvit to Huay Kwang is 20 baht, now got discount & pay only 17 Baht.

bro, Agree with u to a certain extent but during the peak hours the traffic can be a real bitch so actually the trip to yr intended destination can go faster via BTS and MRT.
Generally the taxifares in bkk are of not much consequence as wont cost one an arm and a leg and max i think cannot exceed a 100 plus bht to get u from one end to another. just my thoughts anyway. cheers

short distance yes... but not if u travel to faraway places and traffic is bad. for example cab fare from hway khwang ratchada area to wat prad keaw area will cost more than 100THB. its relative to where u are and where u are going to. taxis can take up quite a bit of a regular wage earner pay if he/she takes it daily.

The reason why I don't take cab when I go to visit MP is to save the commision charges. When I return to Hotel I usually go back by cab liao. The commision the MP added in for cab driver commission can be as high as 200 to 300 baht.

Bo pian, die die must learn to take BTS and Metro. This time got new collection item, a BTS unlimited card and plastic/magnetic metro coin for souvenir lor.

Unless you like to go to those MPs which give commission to taxi drivers. Going to MPs by taxi would not cost you extra charges.

For goodness sake people please don't die die must go to Mona Lisa or Cupidy. There're better and more value for money MPs out there. Those taxi touts only like to show you Mona Lisa catalog and brainwash you to go.

Don't take taxi how to go Victoria's Secret? Wah lan. take bicycle?

You are right man...I even had problem trying to cross from Texas Seafood to the other side of the road..the heavy traffic seems endless.

From Twin Tower Hotel, it was once took me more than half an hour to reach there..thanked to the bloody traffic...decided to walk on the way back to the hotel...took almost the same time...

Near many good MPs along Ratchada - Mirage, Nataree. But I find the rooms not to my liking. Too much gray... If must stay there, ask for a room on the upper floors facing the road (opposite is Emerald Hotel).

Siam Beverly would be a better choice as cheaper, if you do not mind walking a bit more to get to the MPs. The nearest one to it is Caesars.

Not easy to get lost.Heard from my friend that the new underground line breakdown frequently and always delay.....she ever got stuck inside for 1 hour, but such incidents were never reported in the local papers.

Just to update on the MP sites. The MPs and its location are shown in the BTS/MRT maps and are self-explanatory, so I keep the description short and sharp.

At Huay Kwang MRT Stattion: Nataree, Mirage, Hi-Class, Emmanuelle
Caesars, Colonze2. Poseidon is within walking distance towards the next MRT Station,Merchant Court Had been renamed as Swissotel ?.

At Phra Ram 9 MRT Station: Champ Elysee, New Cleopatra

http://myweb.hinet.net/home16/borro/BangkokMRTMap/Sukomvit%20MAP.jpg
At Sukomvit MRT/ Asoke BTS Stations: This is one of a cross point where you can switch from BTS Station to MRT Station, must check out and walk down about, equivalent to 5 storey staircases. Darling is along Sukhumvit Road.

So with these Maps you can DIY for MPs in Bangkok with ease……………….

Just came back from BKK last night and i really would like to thank bro Vmtech and bro Naemlo for advising me on where to go for the bars, seafood and MPs.

Sad to say, didn't had the chance to visit a-go-go bars...our company got tied up with tour agents and my chiong colleagues are all too bz with the planned itineries..so left with just me alone..hence didn't went there.

With so much seafood centres to choose from and didn't know which 1 to go to, we end up with this place in Ratchada called Kor Khoon Pao, as described by the waitress. atmosphere not too bad, not ex also, but service very slow. ask for khao, duno must wait for 1/2 hr then arrive...even want to ask for bill they also like to take their own sweet time...sigh... ...but good food has been compensated for all the flaws.

Wanted to go to Mirage, asked the taxi driver, he duno...show him the addy, still got no clue on where is it. then he drove past Poseidon, quickly ask him to stop...cant find mirage, so settle with Poseidon lor. But it's good enough also lah. Had 198 for myself....can't remember who the rest of my colleagues had cos i'm the 1st 1 to go up. Must say it's definitely worth it for 2000 THB.
Must give model club a try if i were to go back there again.

b.t.w, we went to Hollywood on the 1st night, super happening leh. lotsa chicks but didn't managed to hook ourselves with any of it...so just mainly there for a drink, dance and enjoy the live concert shows. Really good entertainment.

And err...Was reading up this thread and somewhere, i think bro Sornporn said prices between mrt, bts and taxi not much diff. Ya, given the comfort in a cab...plus the meter jumps so slow, some more got no midnite charges...still a relatively good deal. But when traffic flow starts to built up, dun think it's a good idea to take taxis..mrt/bts is always smoother for that case.

Think that's about it for my F.R.

Regards

If you go to Bangkok once in a blue moon or once year, rellied on taxi is alright. However if you been there too often and still depends on this mode of transport, you are going to miss a lot of nice places which you are unlikely to explore. Earlier I had also being too dependance on taxi, cheap, fast and comfort lor, but unless you can converse in their language else will sometimes still ended up at wong locations. Being non-Thai speaking visitor there, now I am able to travel freely to the location I want via their public transport...................now, I can stretch my cashs to cover more exciting places perhaps...................hehehe.

I had heard of MRT (Subway) breakdowns during my last trip hence I cut short of exploring every stations of these sub-way lines.

2 years ago, I bought a RM270 unlimited BTS tickets lasted for 3 days to explore the 'interesting' place around the BTS stations. That time, I really got times so go on OMO mode and got familiarize with buidlings in the vicinity of these BTS stations.

As for MRT or subway exploration, I think I need the operation there to solve their teething problems before riding again, else I will find myself stranded in one of these underground stations liao...........hehehe..

Up to 200 hurt in Thai subway accident

BANGKOK - A subway train slammed into another one that stopped at a station during morning rush hour on Monday, injuring as many as 200 people, six months after the subway system opened in the Thai capital.

Ex-Chinese Communist Party chief Zhao Ziyang dead
Some of the victims were bleeding as rescue workers carried them up the stairs of the Cultural Center station to ambulances.

Others, dazed and crying, were helped up the stairs to the street.

The badly injured driver of one of the trains was trapped in the wreckage until rescue workers pulled him out, said Ms Yupadee Srinak, spokeswoman for the underground train service.

An executive of the company managing the system said that an initial investigation found that the accident resulted from a computer problem.

'The signal from the computer that controls the trains was disappearing from time to time, and there was no computer signal at the time of the accident' said Mr Praphat Jongsanguan.

The number of people injured, initially reported to be in the dozens, climbed as hospitals reported new admissions.

In all, hospital officials reported that about 190 people had been hurt.

Thailand's transport and communication minister Suriya Jungrungreunkij has ruled out the possibility of sabotage by terrorists.

Soon after the accident, service was suspended at all 21 stations in the subway system.

The new subway system was opened to the public in July, linking at three stations with elevated rail lines launched in 1999 to alleviate Bangkok's notoriously heavy traffic. -- AP

Just saw the accident in tonight TV News, a very serious one and very frightening inj more injuring more than 200 office commuters. Look like sky train is safer than underground MRT. I used to stop at Thai Cultural Centre and walk to Carrerforre and Robinson for my meals before proceed further up to Nataree and others MPs near Huay Kwang MRT station. For the time being better take taxi for this stretch of road.

a typical case of penny wise, pound foolish. word of advice is to take cab and ask to "pert meter" (on the meter). if not then take BTS or MRT. but if travel in group or 2 or more, i prefer taxi as per person cost is cheaper. bus of course is the cheapest at 5 thb. :D

Huh? Motor sai onli cost 20 baht....Anyway for first timer.....take note!

2. Dont take motorsai....too dangerous! from one pt to one pt! Live more important huh! Unless u taking motorsai from palazzo to robinson huh! less than 400m!

1)Is it possible to take the BTS or new Subway system to the RCA (Royal City Ave)complex--where alot of the MPs are located in the New Petchaburi Rd area. Since I don't have a map with a distance legend of this area, is it a long walk if I wanted to check out the many MPs: from Mona Lisa (near Asoke) walking down New Petchaburi Rd to Zodiac MP or Riveria MP--near Ekamai?

2)Also interested in visiting Catherine MP--I think its near Rama 9, can I take Bts or subway to this location?

Please list nearest stations or best options for above questions 1 and 2, thanks.

Nearest station will be Pharam 9 Subway. If u wanna go MP, stop at Hway Khwang. Hope this helps.

sorry bro,
your answer was too brief. need clarifications:
1)stations Pharam 9 and Hway Khwang---which station for Catherine MP and which station for multiple MPs on New Petchaburi Rd?
2)After getting off either stations (Phar-9 or Hway-Kh), is it walking distance to MPs or need to take bus or taxi after?
3)Can you give an estimate on the distance (ex: 0.5km, 1km or 2km) for the New Petchaburi Rd MPs, if I wanted to explore and visit several MPs in that area.
Lets say from one end ,start from:Mona Lisa to Zodiac MP, at the other end.
Need to know if MPs are close together--then I'll walk or will take taxi if too far between each MP. Afterall, dont want to tire myself too much in case need to cheong more than 1 MP the same day :D
Thanks.

Need to know if MPs are close together--then I'll walk or will take taxi if too far between each MP. Afterall, dont want to tire myself too much in case need to cheong more than 1 MP the same day :D
Thanks.

Let me help to answer,

1) Pharam 9 for Catherine. I think Hway Kwang is better for Ratchada MPs

2) Pharam 9 u need to take taxi n for Hway Kwang no need.

3) If u dun intend to tire yourself then go Ratchada...
