Yes, some are very well rehearsed in how to make you feel guilty and peer pressure to give in and pay it all and not lose face or label a cheap charlie.
I've read about sometimes some guys get annoy and pull a stupid stunt like the one you described but I highly advised against any of you doing the same. To add up an expensive bill that some locals must somehow pay (and may not be able to do so) will only make enemies in their home territory. Some may not like what happened and take justice into their own hands with some beatings or worse. The fact that you took a gal they know also means they know where you are staying. Remember this is AC where almost all crimes are unsolved.
