Hmm.. I'm not sure if it needs to be roaming. I guess you just want to keep the number, and to keep the number you need to have load once every 3 months or so. I don't think it needs to be on roaming, you just need to have activity and money in the account. Maybe before the 3 months are up you should try loading a small amount.
It also depends on how you load your phone last - If you buy the scratch cards to load your phone, I noticed that it last longer and paying some kiosk to top up load. I had roaming on, but did not use it for 6 months and it still worked when I visited. I had about PHP 300+ balance.
For those who are looking to have a roaming number, as another brother said, it can be very costly. I learned the hard way, forgot to turn on roaming on before I left PI once, and actually called SMART to get it activated. Customer Service put me on hold for 30mins
, cost me a fair bit in overseas call. but got my roaming on.
You will need the 16(I think) numbers on the sim card and call SMART in Philippines(PI) to get it turned on, alternatively you can ask a friend to call SMART customer service from PI, no need for the phone/sim card to be physically there.
There is also Chikka, a free (limited to 6 sms without reply per day). You can register you PI phone number there.
