SINGAPORE: Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Monday (Jan 11) condemned the actions of two Malaysians reportedly involved in suicide bombings in Syria and Iraq that killed more than 30 people.

“Their actions and ideology have no place in Malaysia or Islam, and the Government is absolutely committed to fighting terrorism in all its forms and guises, both at home and overseas,” Mr Najib wrote on his Facebook page.

“We will spare no effort to find out how and why these young men were able to commit these atrocious acts, and will take all measures necessary to prevent others from doing so in the future.”

Malaysian media outlet New Straits Times (NST) reported earlier on Monday that two Malaysians were found to be involved in suicide bombings in Syria and Iraq the previous week.

According to the NST, Terengganu-born Mohd Amirul Ahmad Rahim had set off the bombs he had on him in a car at Islamic State’s (IS) stronghold of Raqqa, Syria during an operation against IS by Arab and Kurdish forces. The attack on Dec 29 saw 21 Kurdish fighters killed along with 16 fighters from IS, which also included Amirul.

Sources told NST that Amirul left his family in Malaysia in October 2014 to join IS. His death came five days before another Malaysian reportedly blew himself up in Tikrit, Iraq.

NST said that on Jan 3, Mohamad Syazwan Mohd Salim was among the seven suicide bombers who had made their way to a police training centre at Speicher military base, about 160km north of Baghdad.

The 31-year-old, with six others, targetted a large group of police forces undergoing training, killing 12 policemen. Twenty others were injured.

Syazwan was said to have left his hometown in Selangor with his brother Muhamad Shazani Mohd Salim, 28, in September 2014 via Turkey. His brother reportedly died on a suicide mission in September 2015 in northern Iraq.

NST understands that the two Malaysians were among those who had been recruited by IS to be trained as suicide bombers. Until recently, Malaysians who joined IS rarely ended as frontline fighters.

Amirul and Syazwan’s death brings the total number of Malaysians with IS links killed to 17. Of the number, six had served as suicide bombers, while the rest died during battles, said NST. *
