Left in the lurch after cheque goes missing
An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:
LIKE Mr Toh Wing Yew ("Questions on DBS' cheque clearance protocol"; June 28), I experienced problems with DBS Bank's cheque clearing process. However, unlike him, I have not recovered the funds. In mid-January, I handed over a US dollar cheque for clearance at the bank counter at DBS' Raffles City branch. I was told that it would take four to six weeks to clear the cheque. No receipt was given but I did not think anything of this as one also does not get a receipt when dropping a cheque in the quick deposit box. In March, the cheque was still not credited into my account and I went back to the bank to inquire about the delay. To my shock, DBS said it had no record of my depositing the cheque. A check with the United States-based payer showed that his account had been debited on Jan 22. DBS said it could not do anything unless I produced a copy of the cheque. Regrettably, I had not made a copy and, since then, have been trying to get the payer to send me one. Months have passed and I have still not received the copy. In the meantime, DBS has done nothing to resolve the matter. I question DBS' liability in this matter. Why was there no record of, or receipt provided for, my cheque deposit? Similar to Mr Toh's case, no one from the bank called me even though I had written my contact number on the back of the cheque. What has happened to my cheque?
